WILD CARDS ANNOUNCED FOR SHENZHEN LONGGANG GEMDALE OPEN

LI NA’S FIRST MATCH DATE CONFIRMED

Two players from China and for the first time a player from Hong Kong, SAR, have been awarded highly sought after main draw singles wildcards for the US$500,000 Shenzhen Longgang Gemdale Open, a WTA International Series event, which will be staged at the Shenzhen Longgang Tennis Center, 29 December, 2012 to 5 January, 2013.

Tournament Director Nick Freyer of IMG was delighted to be able to add to the season’s celebrations for China’s Duan Ying-Ying and Zheng Sai-Sai while Venise Chan, who is making her WTA International Series tournament debut in Shenzhen, has become the first woman player from Hong Kong to be awarded a main draw wild card for a Tour level tournament.

Duan and Zheng both enjoyed success in 2012 and they will be using that as a launching pad in an effort to take their tennis to a higher level. Receiving wildcards for the first event of the year will certainly be an important start for them.

Duan, ranked 132 won events in Wellington, Goyang, Guncheon and Changwon and was a finalist in Suzhou and the Beijing challenger while Zheng, who is ranked not far behind Duan at 138, claimed titles in Taipei and Kurume, was a finalist in Wenshan, made the semis in Phuket and Fukuoka and was a quarter-finalist in Sanya and the Sydney challenger.

Ranked 358, 23 year old Chan from Hong Kong has played Fed Cup for the SAR and has made her way through the Futures Tour. She won events in Bidar in India and Sharm El Sheihk in Egypt. She was a semi-finalist at another Futures event in Sharm El Sheikh and reached the quarters at two tournaments in Bangkok, Chinese Taipei, Seoul and Pattaya.

In addition to making tennis history for Hong Kong, Tournament Director Freyer was also excited to announce that China’s tennis superstar Li Na is confirmed to start her 2013 tennis season with her first match on the first day of the New Year.

“It will be very thrilling for Chinese tennis fans to see Li Na in action on 1st January 2013 and it will be a wonderful way to celebrate the start of the New Year,” Freyer said. “Li will play on Tuesday afternoon, obviously that is subject to normal weather conditions, so we expect to see a big crowd at the Shenzhen Longgang Gemdale Open.

“We are also delighted to say that the wonderful French player Marion Bartoli is scheduled to play her first match on Sunday 30th December, 2012, and she too will no doubt attract quite a following of fans.”

The tournament has also started its own Weibo site which can be accessed via weibo.com/shenzhenopentennis so tennis fans can receive constant updates from things that are happening at the tournament.
